At the global knowledge economy, higher education is more important than ever to help countries achieve their economic and social objectives. The authorities responsible for education around the world gather at a conference organized by the DFO Gold in Lisbon on 3 and April 4, 2008 to determine how higher education systems best serve these major missions of public interest.
The conference coincides with the release of the final report of the thematic review of tertiary education conducted by the OECD for three years on higher education policies of 24 countries. It now looks increasingly in higher education that meets the needs of the economy and society, it is more transparent and to establish closer links with a range of stakeholders. Higher education must adapt and meet this challenge. The report offers a broad range of solutions that leaders can study according to their national context. These recommendations include: institutions outward looking, more autonomous and more diverse; public funding together with a mechanism for sharing costs adjusted, and national strategies to cope with the increasing internationalization of the higher education. An overview of the report, Higher Education in the service of the knowledge society offers an overview of major trends, challenges and strategic directions in the field of higher education.
The Lisbon conference, held under the auspices of the Portuguese Ministry for Science, Technology and Higher Education, will bring together senior officials, academics, representatives of higher education institutions and other groups interested to study the main conclusions of the report and how to apply nationally. The conference is organized locally by the Instituto Superior de Ciencias do Trabalho e da Empresa (ISCTE), public university located in Lisbon.
